WPA Technical Conference

The Wood Processors Association (WPA) and Frame & Truss Manufacturers Association (FTMA) Technical Conference was held in Rotorua last month.

The focus this year was on the Building Act Review, Timber Quality, Single Hazard Class recommendations and other projects that WPA have underway such as Secure Pathway and Industry Benchmarking.

Hon Maurice Williamson delivered an engaging and topical speech which provided conference delegates with an update on the Leaky Homes Issues and the Building Act Review. The Building Act changes focus on three key areas; clearer accountability, more efficient regulation, and ensuring NZ has the necessary skills and knowledge to get the job done. Hon Maurice Williamson commented "the bottom line is there will be a market advantage for suppliers who can provide independent verification of their products and services"

Delegates also had the opportunity to have a field trip around Scion to see some of the innovative science taking place around wood and meet with the new WPA CEO, Dr Jon Tanner, and also to acknowledge the work of ex-WPA Chair, David Anderson, and ex-WPA CEO, Peter Bodeker, who attended and spoke at the Conference Dinner.

Conference presentations are now available for download on the WPA website.

If you are not yet a member of WPA or FTMA, I encourage you to join. They do a fantastic job on behalf of the timber processing and fabrication sectors and really add value through advocacy on behalf of their members, specifically ensuring the New Zealand wood processing industry has both a profile and a collective voice in political and public arenas.
